The story begins when Anna Cooper, the mother of Neil Cole, falls into a ditch and is critically injured while swerving to avoid a wrong-way driver - her son's mistress, April Cox. Neil's wife, Amy, discovers her unconscious mother-in-law and urgently calls her husband for help.
